Another Cashless ATM Interruption: Your Payment Options, and Why Apple Pay & Google Pay Belongs in Your Backup Plan
Another Cashless ATM Interruption: Reportedly About 500 Stores Affected
The cannabis industry is dealing with another interruption in cashless ATM (CATM) processing. Reports indicate that an ATM network recently pulled out of the cannabis space, and that the change has affected about 500 stores. An all too common occurrence over the last few years.
If this sounds familiar, it should. In March 2026, more than 1,000 dispensaries lost debit-style processing, and in June, approximately 6,000 terminal IDs were reportedly deactivated. We covered both in our March 2026 outage article and in Cashless ATM Trouble Continues.
Combine all of these outages with the cashless ATM class action lawsuit in Kansas City and the lesson is becoming clear. Your dispensary needs to add payment processing redundancy…today.
Why These Interruptions Keep Happening
Cashless ATM depends on a chain of companies, and when one link steps back, every store connected to it can lose service at once. As we noted in March, if an acquiring bank or network leaves the space, the old service does not generally come back. A new service provider and a new banking relationship have to be put in its place. That is why a quick reboot is rarely the answer.
Loanviser Has Other Options If You Need Them
The good news is that you are not stuck. Loanviser works with multiple partners, so if your current provider is affected, we can help you move quickly. Depending on your store, that can include:
- Alternative cashless ATM providers (if you want to stay with a familiar checkout experience)
- PIN debit
- ACH payments
- Credit card processing
- Apple Pay® and Google Pay® (runs in parallel to whatever systems you currently use)
Having more than one option available also makes it easier to follow the advice we have given operators all year: do not rely on a single payment solution. Sign up with more than one provider, split volume between registers, in-store and delivery, or locations, and keep a second provider ready so you can switch over when a disruption hits.
Apple Pay and Google Pay: Convenient for Customers, Helpful for Redundancy
Of all the options, one stands out because customers actually enjoy using it. Apple Pay® and Google Pay® are part of everyday commerce all over the country, and people already use digital wallets to dine, shop and explore. Paying at your dispensary should be just as easy. As we shared in our Apple Pay and Google Pay announcement, this cannabis payment platform offers:
- Fast checkout
- Less cash handling
- A convenience payment option
- More ways for customers to complete a purchase
- No new hardware to purchase or install
Apple Pay® and Google Pay® also use tokenization and device authentication, which help reduce exposure to stolen physical card fraud, and no physical credit card ever touches your device.
Behind the scenes, the platform launched in April 2025. According to its own reported operating data, it supports 500+ dispensaries and 325,000+ transactions per month, and operates through multiple regulated U.S. financial institutions and established payment partners. It reports compliance controls that include BSA/AML, KYC/KYB, OFAC screening and NACHA rules.
Here is the redundancy bonus: it can run alongside your cashless ATM and other payment methods. That means when a provider or network goes down, your customers still have an easy way to pay, and you are not forced back to cash-only. You can see it for yourself with a free 30-day trial of at least 25 transactions. If you own multiple dispensaries, test it at one location first.
